4 Gorges In The Jungfrau Region

Jungfrau Region's Blogbuster Series / Nr. 68

Since canyons are naturally surrounded by a mystical atmosphere, you can be sure that the following canyons will make any trip a magical experience.

#2 GLACIER GORGE GRINDELWALD

The gorge of the lower Grindelwald glacier, once covered by glacial ice, is accessible through rock galleries and tunnels. For a special thrill, there is a net stretched across the gorge about halfway down. On this we can prove our courage and walk over the roaring Lütschine. Or jump from a platform attached to a rope into the depths and swing through the gorge like an oversized pendulum. Pure adrenaline. Every Friday, the Grindelwald Glacier Gorge is open until 10 pm.

#2 ALPBACH GORGE

We should be free of giddiness and have a certain amount of surefootedness if we venture into the Alpbach Gorge between Meiringen and Hasliberg. This via ferrata-like path in the rock walls above the rushing brook is not for the faint of heart. The starting point is the valley station of the Meiringen-Hasliberg cable cars. The gorge can only be walked from the bottom to the top. A normal hiking trail leads back to Meiringen.

#3 ROSENLAUI GLACIER GORGE

The narrow gorge below the Rosenlaui Glacier is part of the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. Here, a secured path 573 meters long with several tunnels and a height difference of 155 meters has been blasted into the rock. It leads us past massive waterfalls, romantic grottos and bizarre rock formations. This gorge is also only accessible upwards. Back to the starting point we hike through a primeval mountain forest.

#4 AARE GORGE

In the Haslital, between the villages of Meiringen and Innertkirchen, the river Aare has cut its way through the limestone rocks over tens of thousands of years. The result is a 1.4 kilometer long and up to 200 meter deep gorge, which is only 1 to 2 meters wide in places. The Aare Gorge is accessible from Meiringen as well as from Innertkirchen. Tip: In the months of July and August it is open with lighting until 10 pm.
